High Speed Internet Service Poll

I am taking a count of those of you who would like High Speed Internet Service in Cedar Ridge and Comstock.

The poll will run for 30 days and results will be presented to AT&T and Comcast to show them our desire to join the rest of the World.

Tell you neighbors and have them vote in the poll, the more votes the better.

Yes to anything faster than dial up. I run a LAN Administration business out of Modesto and would love to be able to move to Cedar Ridge permanently but cannot do that without a high speed connection.

Carey,

I have ISDN and with 2 channels active I can get about 128 KBits in both directions. But if you use remote desk top or VPN then I've found that 128 kbits isn't really enough.

In some areas of CR wireless is available. You'll need line-o-sight to Mt Elizabeth tower. Or on the west slope to Sonora/Angels camp (not very probable). Mother Lode internet, Hub3 and Goldrush some of the ISP's that offer wireless.

Satellite is also available to those who can see the Southern sky. While the download speeds are good, uploading is another matter (dialup speeds, channel bidding to be able to turn on the transmitter). The satellite guys (Direct and Dish) have been offering new business accounts to allow better uplinks and VPN, expensive though.

I connect through a VPN connection using remote desktop to work on the systems. ISDN just doesn't make it. I have some experience with satelite but it is not very reliable from what I have found. Although that is a couple of years back now.

Our house is on Oxbow Lane North and I don't think the wireless is an option. I just have to wait for DSL or Cable connections. Then we will move up full time. I spent some time working last week through a dialup connection and what would have taken about an hour took 3 hours.

I am a software engineer as well as the developer/administrator of a website hosting service. Being able to work from Cedar Ridge would enable me to shift my primary location from San Jose, lowering my general stress level and thereby making the world a better place for people everywhere.

The latest info on bringing Broadband to the Ridge.

There is a new website setup by some Tuolumne County folks to address the lack of Boardband internet access Tuolumne County. The URL is http://www.networksierra.org.They have some information about the lastest County contract with ComCast.

I've also had an email a CONXX guy (http://www.conxx.net) , a company offering communication solutions. He said they have a presentation with the County Supervisors this month. I've also read an article in the Union Democrat saying that this company was meeting with Network Sierra on April 17, 2007.

We have satelitte internet service which is great except when the weather is bad! High speed from AT&T would be great!!

Morning Everyone,
My daughter came with me to Cedar Ridge a few weeks ago. She has a new cell phone with internet access. She said she was able to connect. I am not sure how fast it was or how reliable. I called AT&T in Sonora and they said they really don't have internet service availalbe in Cedar Ridge. However, she said you can try it for a month and see. I guess the issue is some can get and other cannot and it not that fast and not that reliable.. I was wondering, has anyone had any experience with cell phone intenet access. I leaning to Hughes Net at this time.

AH! --- ATT wireless and the internet. Yes! ATT wireless Edge service is available in Cedar Ridge anywhere that you can make a cell call. As for the faster G3 service, I don't know, as I don't have a G3 phone. ATT does sell a USB and PCM attachments for the PCs (I think) in both Edge and G3 data services... Not cheap. ($79.95 a month?). And, as I said I don't know if G3 service is available on our cell towers. Neither service is as fast as Hughsnet or Wildblue satellite service. But it's probably a lot faster than dialup.

There is a new G3s service that will be available soon (the new iPhone was announced today), but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to appear on a cell tower near Cedar Ridge. This is why I still use the original Edge iPhone. Only the city dwellers can take advantage of the latest and greatest in internet technologies. We poor soles in the proverbial boon docks must continue using smoke signals for a while longer. This is how it must have felt for those experiencing the original deployment of electricity.

AH! But I seem to remember that the current Federal Administration putting $10 billion (out of a whopping $768 billion) in expanding the reach of broadband internet services to those currently having to use these smoke signals. OH I see! That money was given to only those researching how to expand broadband services, not to those that could actually implement something, like ATT.

Still waiting for DSL! Maybe someday...

Most of Cedar Ridge (those who had Comcast TV) have had the availability to Comcast High Speed internet service for a year or more. There are three speeds; 6 Mbit, 25 Mbit and 50 Mbit. Plus Comcast offers VOIP (telephone) and TV service on the same cable. Comcast's teaser prices are great, but when they are over, the TV and Phone services are about the same as AT&T and Directv. And of course you can't buy the equivalent internet service for any price. So $64.95 for 25 Mbit is the bestdeal going

Currently there is no Bandwidth limit. It was 250 GB per month, but it has been suspended while they work out a new plan. We stream about 175-200 GB per month in addition to DirectTV. We use Netflix and Amazon for our streaming services plus the HBO, SHO, ENC, MAX, and other streaming services offered by Directtv.

25 Mbits seems to be OK for the streaming TV and is plenty fast for the Internet.

The main Comcast service is backed up so when the power on the Ridge is out and you have a generator, then internet/tv/phone will be available.
